Professor Matthew Harding

The HAL Victorian Chapter 2024 Oration on the topic “Challenging Trustee Discretions” will be delivered by Professor Matthew Harding, former Dean of Melbourne University Law School.

Many lawyers will have had to deal or will need to deal with trustees exercising widely defined discretions in the management of trusts.

Matthew Harding is a professor of law at the University of Melbourne.

He is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading academic experts on equity and trusts and on the law regulating charities and other civil society organisations. He has published widely in those and other fields.

Prof Harding was the Dean of the Melbourne Law School from 2022-2024 and he has held a number of visiting appointments including as the Kwa Geok Choo Distinguished Visitor at the National University of Singapore in 2020 and the Cheng Yu Tung Visiting Professor at the University of Hong Kong in 2024.

He is a past Chair of the Charity Law Association of Australia and New Zealand and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law.
