“Safeguarding Democracy, Rule of Law and Justice: Global Challenges and the Role of AI”

The Global Summit of Hellenic Lawyers, held in Athens from 7–10 July 2025, was organised by the Hellenic Australian Lawyers Association (HAL) in collaboration with the Hellenic Lawyers Association of New York, the Cyprus Bar Association and the Plenary of the Greek Bar Associations. The Summit brought together jurists, academics, practitioners and philhellenes under the theme “Safeguarding Democracy, Rule of Law, and Justice: Global Challenges and the Role of AI”.
The Summit, held within the symbolic heart of Western legal and democratic tradition, united distinguished lawyers of Greek origin and philhellenes from around the world in a common proclamation of commitment to the fundamental values of the rule of law, democracy and justice. Importantly, the Summit achieved broad participation, with over 500 registered delegates in attendance across the days of the conference, representing a diverse international cohort of jurists, academics, and practitioners.
Australia was prominently represented. The Australian delegation was led by The Hon. Chief Justice Stephen Gageler AC of the High Court of Australia, who delivered the opening keynote address. Other distinguished Australian speakers included:
· The Hon. Chief Justice Peter Quinlan, Supreme Court of Western Australia.
· The Hon. Justice Melissa Perry, Federal Court of Australia.
· The Hon. Justice Emilios Kyrou AO, President of the Administrative Review Tribunal and Judge of the Federal Court of Australia.
· The Hon. Anthe Philippides, former Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland.
· Prof. John Tasioulas, Professor of Ethics and Legal Philosophy and Director of the Institute for Ethics in AI at the University of Oxford.
Their participation ensured that Australian jurisprudence and perspectives on democracy, evolving technology and the rule of law were at the forefront of the Summit’s comparative discussions. HAL conveys its deep gratitude to our distinguished speakers for their support and exemplary representation of HAL at this inaugural Summit.
HAL also conveys its gratitude for the collaborative work undertaken by the Cyprus Bar Association, the Hellenic Lawyers Association of New York, and the Plenary of the Greek Bar Associations to bring this historic undertaking to fruition. The shared vision was articulated in the expectation that the Summit would become a regular future event and a point of reference for Hellenism worldwide.
Opening Ceremony
The Summit commenced at the Acropolis Museum with formal addresses from leading political and legal figures. Among them were His Excellency Constantine Tassoulas, President of the Hellenic Republic; Georgios Floridis, Minister of Justice of Greece; Marios Hartsiotes, Minister of Justice and Public Order of Cyprus; Mr Ioannis Loverdos, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs; Dr Haris Doukas, Mayor of Athens, and ambassadors and presidents of major bar associations, including Her Excellency Alison Duncan (Ambassador of Australia to Greece), Joseph Tsalanidis (HAL), George N. Zapantis (Hellenic Lawyers Association of New York), Dimitrios Vervesos (Plenary of the Greek Bar Associations) and Michael Vorkas (Cyprus Bar Association).
Keynote Session Highlights
The keynote addresses, delivered on the second day, set the intellectual framework for the Summit. They included:
· The Hon. Chief Justice Stephen Gageler AC (Australia), reflecting on the institutional resilience of democracies in the age of digital transformation, drawing upon ancient wisdom and logic.
· Evangelos Venizelos, Professor Emeritus and former Deputy Prime Minister of Greece, on constitutionalism in the European and wider global context.
· The Hon. Michael A. Chagares, Chief Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, on judicial perspectives from the United States.
· Professor Achilles Emilianides, Dean of Law, University of Nicosia, on governance and AI in the Cypriot and regional EU setting.
There were presentations also from the Hon. Andromache Karakatsanis, Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada and the Hon. Madeline Singas, Associate Judge, New York State Court of Appeals.
The Global Summit of Hellenic Lawyers 2025 highlighted the challenges faced by legal systems worldwide and offered a comparative platform for addressing them. It demonstrated that across jurisdictions, there remains a shared conviction that law must serve as a safeguard for democracy, the rule of law and justice.
The Summit’s value extended beyond the individual sessions. By bringing together jurists of Greek origin from around the world alongside philhellene colleagues, it reinforced the idea of a global Hellenic legal community. From Athens, in the symbolic shadow of the Parthenon, participants proclaimed a collective commitment to fundamental values rooted in both ancient and modern traditions of justice.
Looking ahead, HAL together with our partner organisations, is already working towards convening the next Global Summit of Hellenic Lawyers in 2027. While the precise dates are yet to be confirmed, we encourage all colleagues and institutions to mark their calendars now. Our shared ambition is to build upon the success of Athens 2025 and to ensure that the Summit becomes a permanent fixture for the global Hellenic legal community.
