WA: The War and the Law on Antiquities – 10 October 2017

The WA Chapter of the Hellenic Australian Lawyers Association co-hosted an event featuring a lecture on the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles, at the University of Western Australia on 10 October 2017.

Dr Kevin J. O’Toole delivered the lecture: “The War and the Law on Antiquities: The Case of the Parthenon Marbles“.

The event was held in conjunction with the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Western Australia, and the Consulate of Greece in Perth.

In 2018 the Western Australia Chapter will be hosting its inaugural Oration.

SA: The John Perry Oration 2017 – 22 September 2017

The SA Chapter of the Hellenic Australian Lawyers Association held the 2017 John Perry Oration, featuring guest speaker The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG.

This followed the successful John Perry Orations in 2015 and 2016.

The Hon Michael Kirby spoke on the topic “Justice Perry and the beneficial interface between Australian and International Law”.

The Oration was held on 22 September 2017 at  the Adelaide Pavilion, in the presence of the National Patron of the Association, The Hon. Chief Justice Chris Kourakis, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of South Australia, and many other HAL members and guests.

Plans are underway for the 2018 Perry Oration in the second half of 2018.

QLD: Alexander Freeleagus Oration – 1 September 2017

The Honourable Patrick Keane AC, Justice of the High Court of Australia, delivered the 2017 Clayton Utz Alexander Freeleagus Oration on Friday 1 September 2017.

This was the third Freeleagus Oration held by the Queensland Chapter, following orations delivered by Justice Kyrou in 2015, and Chief Justice Kiefel AC in 2016.

The title of the 2017 Oration was The Jury on Trial: From Socrates to Modern Times, with more than 270 guests in attendance.

It was held at the Banco Court of the Supreme Court of Queensland, QEII Courts of Law Complex, 415 George Street, Brisbane.

A Tribute to the late Alexander Christy Freeleagus was provided by Michael Klug AM, while the Queensland Chapter Patron, The Hon Justice Anthe Philippides, Judge of Appeal, Supreme Court of Queensland, made a Closing Address.

Entertainment by acclaimed Bouzouki player George Bousias followed during a reception.

The 2018 Freeleagus Oration will be delivered on 19 October 2018 by the President of the Queensland Court of Appeal, the Hon. Justice Walter Sofronoff.

VIC: Inaugural Victorian Chapter Oration – 4 August 2017

The Honourable Geoffrey Nettle, Justice of the High Court of Australia, delivered the inaugural Victorian Chapter Oration in Melbourne earlier this month.

The Oration, titled “Some Hellenic Contributions to the Law”, was held on 4 August at Monash University Law Chambers before a large audience, including the Victorian Chapter Patron, The Hon Justice Emilios Kyrou.

The Victorian Chapter proposes it will host an oration annually, with the 2018 Oration to be held in the second half of 2018.
