SA: Recent Developments in Elder Law Seminar – 16 May 2019

HAL (SA) hosted a CPD recently on the topic of ‘Recent Developments in Elder Law’, presented by the Solicitor-General of South Australia, Dr Chris Bleby, and Mark Livesey QC.

Both eminent advocates, and Counsels on the reserved decision of the Full Court following the decision of Stanley J in BC v Public Advocate [2018] SASC 193 in the Supreme Court of SA.

The CPD was attended by 24 attendees.

Following the speakers, the floor was opened to questions, which continued for some 30 minutes thereafter.

The topic had wide appeal. It involves areas of law, such as, Elder Law, Statutory Construction, Guardianship Act, the Human Rights of the protected person being detained, Criminal Law, etc.

The night was a resounding success once again.

WA: HAL Chapter Information Evening – 4 April 2019

The Western Australian Chapter of HAL held an information evening on 4 April 2019 for members to learn more about Hellenic Australian Lawyers Association.

It also provided an opportunity to thank Mr Wayne Martin AC QC for his support of HAL as the outgoing WA Chapter Patron and thank the new HAL WA Chapter Patron Chief Justice Quinlan.

The information evening was held in the offices of Jackson McDonald Lawyers.

QLD: The Hon Justice James Douglas lecture on Sir Harry Gibbs – 15 March 2019

The Honourable Justice James Douglas focussed on the role that Sir Harry Gibbs played in developing the legal and constitutional framework of Papua New Guinea in an address to HAL members at the Queensland Supreme Court Library on 15 March, 2019.

He spoke in detail of Sir Harry’s activities in the then-territory of Papua New Guinea during World War 2, where he served as an army legal and staff officer.

The Judge’s speech, “Sir Harry Gibbs and Papua New Guinea” can be downloaded, as well as an accompanying powerpoint presentation featuring photographs and images from Sir Harry’s time in PNG.

The Hon. Justice James Douglas was once an Associate to Sir Harry Gibbs, and provided a rare insight into one of Australia’s most celebrated judicial figures.

He also shared one of Sir Harry’s lesser-known writings, where he compared his PNG working environment to a famous poem, “To His Coy Mistress”.

A collection of decorations and medals awarded to Sir Harry Gibbs is also on display in the Supreme Court Library.
